There needs to be a requirement for making a story “Headline News.” Headline News means, besides the obvious of being the headline, that it is important to a majority of people. It means that somehow most people see relevance, impact, or insight into the issue. Why do all these fluff pieces make headlines? Is “Octomom” really headline news? I enjoy a good laugh at ridiculousness from time to time, but I do not view it as headline material. I acknowledge that a majority of people in this world don’t care about politics, foreign economies, or discoveries. So have we really brought our level of news down to meet the ignorance of the majority, just to pick up a few ratings? This really isn’t about the news anymore; this is about making people watch it. Every newscast has a set pattern: Top Stories that include what the President had for lunch, local news which is more like a “who shot who on the East Side,” foreign news which needs at least one flag burning and one politician complaining, and then fluff. I wish the industry would concentrate on gaining a higher quality of viewer so that we’d get some worthwhile information.
